JugoslavijaNina The concept of a man named Antonio Da Silva performing in front of a microphone is almost laughable, especially when we consider some of the other famous singer-songwriters who have come out of the same country. But that is exactly what happened with a man named Antonio Da Silva, a singer from the former Yugoslavia known for his covers of famous English songs and his unconventionally sexy and upbeat music. That is, of course, until we find out that we are listening to an English-born man who grew up in the U.S. and moved to the U.K. for a better life. Antonio Da Silva was born in Belgrade, Yugoslavia in 1961. He grew up listening to both local music and the music that came through the airwaves, mainly American, as his father loved Elvis Presley. Over time, Da Silva became more and more interested in the English language and English music, and in 1981 he moved to England, where he spent the next 20 years on the music scene, building up a clientele of musicians and producers. And yet, in spite of his growing success, Antonio Da Silva didn't want to be a famous singer. He says, "I think I'm doing what I always wanted to do, which was to be a songwriter. But I love singing and I love performing. When I went to England, I felt very comfortable in English. I really enjoyed living there, but I was always drawn to the music scene in the U.S. So I went back to the U.S. for many reasons." That music scene, however, was far from welcoming. Most people simply didn't understand his English, and so he felt isolated from the musical community. "For a few years, I really didn't have any interactions with people. I didn't really know anyone. I didn't know what they were thinking. I didn't know what their response was going to be." He added, "They didn't understand me. It really, really made me feel lonely and it really, really made me want to do something. I wanted to make the songs I wanted to make. I wanted to have the freedom that I had in England." And so he returned to England, but he still had not done away with his goal to be an English songwriter. In 1998, he returned to the United States with one plan: to become a well-respected
